NPGのドラマー、ジョン・ブラックウェルがコロンビアの地元ラジオでインタビューを受けた。プリンスとはどのように出会ったかについてジョンはプリンスがパティ・ラベルのショーで彼を見つけたこと、舞台裏で二人の屈強な男が近づいてきた時に二人の間からプリンスが握手して「最高だった」と言われた事を話した。プリンスはパティと一緒のツアーを終えるように言いペイズリー・パークに招待した。そこでジョンはプリンスとラリー・グラハムとジャムセッションをした。プリンスはジョンにバンドに誘ったが、ジョンは日本のナンバーワンのポップスターと契約していたので、プリンスはNPGに加入する前にそのギグを終えさせた。

"Life Of The Party"(D) (0:35)
ドアが12時に開いた。クラブのメンバーが最初に入場し、私たちは全員2時間待たなければならなかった（最後の45分間はローディーがすべてをセットアップするのを見ていた）。ジョンが登場し、ドラムセットを微調整してから演奏を始めた。最初からThe Rainbow Childrenが最初の曲になることはわかっていた。バンドメンバー全員がソロを演奏するチャンスを得た。プリンスが姿を現したのは15分後だった！シーラがステージに登場し、小さなギターと小さなウォーターボトルを弾いた。そして、ウェンディがステージに登場し、Girls & Boysを含む数曲を演奏した。セットリストの正確な順番はぼんやりしているのですが誰か助けてください！

しかし、すべての曲が伸びやかで、回転していました。プリンスは最高でした！ステージの周りを踊り回り、バンドを楽しませ次の瞬間には彼らが彼のリードに付いて来られるかどうかを見ていました。 HOBはとても暑かったが最高でした！プリンスは5回の完売ショーの後、LAにきちんと別れを告げていたようです。彼が戻ってきて、もう一度やり直せるといいな。

ドアは真夜中に開いたが、プリンスと8人編成のバンドがステージに現れたのは午前3時過ぎだった。カバー曲、即興のジャムセッション、ハードなファンク

で構成された早朝のセットリストは午前5時まで続いた。アリーナでのショーとは異なり、セットリストには台本がなく、ちょっとした衝動に任せていた。深紅のスーツ、サングラス、厚底サンダル姿のプリンスは、ギターを弾いてショーを開始したが、音響の問題でアンプを床に落としてしまったため、キーボードからステージの縁に立ってファンを引っ張り上げて一緒に踊るスタイルに切り替え、夜を過ごした。
このショーは、プリンスが常軌を逸した様子を目にする機会となり、70年代初期のファンクやR&Bの影響にどっぷり浸かっていた。バンドはフレッシュで、3時間のショーを終えた直後に到着したにもかかわらず、疲れた様子はほとんどなかった。むしろ、攻撃的な姿勢でカバー曲を演奏していた。

最初の 30 分間、プリンスはスライ & ザ ファミリー ストーンの「Everyday People」と「Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin」のフリーフォーム ファンク カバーをリードした。ゲストとして、元ストーンズのベーシスト、ラリー グラハムがステージ中央でソロを演奏し、プリンスはエフェクトペダルをいじりました。

バンドは、タワー オブ パワーの「What is Hip?」とスティーヴィー ワンダーの「Superstition」の長いカバーも演奏しました。ブラックウェルは、元ジェームス ブラウンのサックス奏者メイシオ パーカーを含む 3 人編成のホーン セクションと同様に、何度もスポットライトを浴びました。

プリンスは、肩をたたいてソロの合図を出し、次にどの方向に進むか決めているかのようにステージを歩き回りました。ショーは「Controversy」の延長バージョンで幕を閉じました。

開始時に、プリンスは照明を消すように指示したため、ステージは完全に暗くなりました。外はちょうど明るくなり始めた頃だったので、それは適切でした。

フィラデルフィアで行われたアフターパーティーでクエストラブがその夜のDJとして招かれた。彼にとってこれは憧れのプリンスに強い印象を与える絶好の機会だった。
プリンスがビリヤードに集中している間、クエストラブはナイジェリアのアフロビートのレジェンド、フェラ・クティの曲をかけ始めた。「次に気がつくと、彼が俺のブースに歩いてきて、『何か他の曲をかけてくれないか』と言ったので、びっくりしたんだ」とクエストラブは後に回想した。クエストラブはプリンスがその曲を気に入らなかっただけだと思い、よりエネルギッシュなフェラ・クティの曲に切り替えた。しかしそれは違った。プリンスはDJブースに戻る代わりに、アシスタントにDVDケースを持たせた。「彼女がそれを俺に渡して『これをかけて』と言ったんで開けてみると『ファインディング・ニモ』だったんだ」。クエストラブはそれがBGMだと勘違いし、DJを続けた。しばらくしてアシスタントが戻ってきて「もう音楽は止めてもいいですよ」と言った。
その時、彼は悟った「ちょっと待て、俺はクビになって、アニメの魚に交代させられたのか？」満員のアフターパーディーはピクサー映画がほぼ静寂の中で上映されると静まり返った会場で何十人もの大人がカクレクマノミがスクリーンを泳ぐ様子を見つめていた。屈辱にもかかわらずクエストラブは演奏時間に対して1200ドルの小切手を受け取った。

「キムが一緒にいて、彼の髪をセットしていました。とにかく午前2時頃で、私たちはまだスタジオにいて、私は「ああ、寝なきゃ」って思いました。私たちは正午か午後2時頃からそこにいました。それで彼は「ルース、家が欲しいんだ」って言うんです、私は「えっと、どういう意味？」って聞くと彼は「ロサンゼルスで家が欲しいんだ」って言うから、私は「わかった、じゃあ探すわ」って言ったけれど、今午前2時頃よ。どうしよう？って思いました。それでネットで探したんです。結局1時間以内にこの家を見つけました。彼が今すぐ欲しいって言ってから、20分くらいで戻ってきてたので私は「今パソコンを開いたところよ」って言うと、彼は「わかった、すぐ戻るよ」って言いました。それからこの家を見つけたんです。3121番地の。どこにあるかは言いたくないけど、それで彼が入ってきてそれを見て、「何か見つかった？」って言うので私は、「ああ、もう1時間経ったわね。今のところ3軒くらい候補があるんだけど、どう思う？」って感じで見せました。彼は最初の画像を見て、それがアルバムタイトルと同じ3121で、「これだ。これが欲しい」って言うから、私は「他のは見たくないの？」って聞くと、「いや、いや、これでいい」って言い彼はスタジオに入りました。午前4時。私はすべての情報を手に入れて、この家のエージェントにメールを送ると彼が帰ってきて「この家はどうだい？」って聞かれ「いや、まだ3時よ。ロサンゼルスだと午前2時みたいだし、」そしたら彼は「わかった」って言って、それから午前6時に完成した「3121」が聞こえてきました。4時までにはほぼ完成してたんです。ペイズリー・パークに彼と私二人きりの時で、スタジオのドアが開いていたので、各楽器が重なっていくミックスの過程が全部聞こえてきました。「今の今、これを作ったの？」って驚きました。」

元女優/歌手のバルビ・ベントンから2004年10月から2005年9月までの１年間賃貸された家。多くのホームパーティが行われ、アルバム「3121」の大部分は家に設置されたホームスタジオでレコーディングされた。

「僕はファンとして、3時間くらい彼に宗教の話をさせたことがある。3121の家（ロサンゼルスの邸宅）で音楽について話していたら、「ついておいで」と言われて。ついにか、と思った。家の中を通り、階段を下りて彼の寝室まで行った。そこにはシンボルの枕とか紫のものがたくさんあって、「うわあ」と思ってたら、彼がクローゼットを開けて僕に聖書を手渡したんだ。僕はてっきり『I Wish U Heaven』の未発表音源（アセテート）でもくれるのかと思ったのに、聖書だったんだ。彼は「これを子供たちに読んであげてほしい」って言ったんだ。僕は「僕はユダヤ系だし、あまり宗教はやらないんだ」って答えたよ。」

「私の母とプリンスの誕生日は同じなんです。そして性格も非常によく似ていました。私の母の方が少し気性が激しかったかもしれませんが（笑）。母は境界性パーソナリティ障害や統合失調症のような傾向があり、そんな母と過ごす中で、私は「空気を読む」ことや、非言語コミュニケーションを瞬時に理解する能力を身につけました。それがプリンスだけでなく、彼の周囲にいた気難しい人たちに対処する上でも非常に役立ちました。実はプリンス本人よりも、彼の周りにいた人たちの方がずっと「毒」がある場合が多かったです。彼らの個性をどう操るかが、プリンス本人と向き合うことよりも大きな課題でした。私の時期のプリンスは、80年代の話を聞く限り、かなり丸くなっていたようです。
なぜ女性を好むのか、彼本人が理由を話してくれたことがあります。あるセッションの後、オフィスに来てこう言ったんです。「なぜ僕の周りには女性が多いか分かるか？ 女性は男性よりもエゴが少ないからだ。プロセスの中で争うことなく、自由に創造性を発揮できる」。そして彼はエジプト学の話を交えて、「古代エジプトの書記は女性だった。彼女たちは情報をそのまま吸収し、あるべき姿で記録することができたからだ」と語っていました。彼から学んだ教訓はたくさんあります。第一に、常に自分の直感を信じること。第二に、何かがうまくいかない時は、それをありのままに受け入れるか、手放すこと。全てをコントロールすることはできません。また、物事を個人的に受け取らない（take it personally）ことも重要です。相手の態度はその人自身の問題であり、こちらの問題ではありません。」

「彼は私のことを聞いて、ピアニスト兼シンガーソングライターのフランク・マッコムと演奏するのを聴きに来てくれました。ロサンゼルスのLevel Oneというクラブで私がやっていたショーに、プリンスが来てくれたんです。彼と、彼の友人で素晴らしいジャズ・ボーカリストのレイチェル・フェレルが私の演奏を聴きに来てくれました。当時ベーシストだったレイモンド・マッキンリーが、演奏中にそっと私に教えてくれたんです。本当に不思議な感覚でした！最初のセットが終わると、彼のボディガードが私のところにやって来ました。プリンスが私に会いたがっていたんです。その夜、クリス・ハートも観客の中にいて、みんな圧倒されていました。
それで、休憩時間に彼に会いに行って、音楽のこと、コンテンツの質、歌詞、そしてその重要性について話しました。彼がジル・スコットをその好例だと話していたのを覚えています。ショーの後、彼は帰らなければならなかったのですが、アシスタントのルース・アルゼートがやって来て、私の情報を全部聞きたいと言って、夢のドラムセットを送ってくれると言ってくれました。本当に驚きました！

私はDWのエンドユーザーだったので、この7ピースのキットをお願いしたんです。スパイダーパインレッドで、美しい木目と高貴なゴールドの縁取りが目を引きました。本当にゴージャスでした。あれは今まで持っていた中で最高のキットでした。それを彼が私にプレゼントしてくれたという事実は、さらに歴史的な出来事でした。ドラムが届いた後、彼に電話してお礼を言いました。彼は自分の家でジャムセッションをしようと言ってくれて、ドラムセットも運ぶと言ってくれたんです。それで実際にそうしました。彼のリビングルームでジャムセッションをするのは最高でした！」
